When the Union troops arrived near Vicksburg they found the Confederate troops not only on the high ground but had cleared much of the surrounding land of vegetation. This made making an assault much more difficult. Ultimately Grant decided to lay siege to the city, an event that lasted for 47 days, from May 18 until July 4, 1863 Confederate General Pemberton surrendered.
