When Ken first peered out the window on the morning of arrival in Vicksburg he was amazed at how narrow the river had become. (He didn’t understand until later that they were anchored in the Yazoo River Diversion Canal, not the Mississippi River.) The relative narrowness of the canal, and all the barges occupying both banks (including one that seemed to be smoldering) made for an interesting trip on the way out. The Countess was something like 105 feet wide, and at one point the available canal was something like 125 feet wide.
